Despite
appearances, a
loading dock is one
of the most
dangerous of all
areas in a
production or
distribution
facility. There are
a great number of
fast-moving,
heavily-laden
machines moving in
and out of trucks
and product staging
areas, accidents are
bound to occur.
Although OSHA's
minimum requirement
for "Truck Dock
Safety" is that
during the
loading/unloading
process, a wheel
chock must be in
place on each truck.
Take some time to
observe your docks,
do the truckers
chock on wheel, do
your docks even have
chocks? A much
better alternative
exists. Since its
creation in 1980,
the truck restraint
has brought a huge
increase in the
degree of safety at
the loading dock,
not seen since the
invention of the
dock leveler.
A truck restraint is
a mechanical or
hydraulic device
that
"restrains"
or holds a truck to
its dock position.
The ICC or
"Mansfield"
bar of a trailer not
only prevents
under-ride, it is
the main part by
which a truck
restraint functions.
The truck restraint
prevents pre-mature
departures and
creates a positive
communication system
between the truck
drive and the dock
worker with its
red/green light
package. When a
truck restraint is
interlocked with a
automatic leveler,
it must be used to
operate the leveler,
thereby omitting
worker error or
non-usage. A Blue
Giant truck
restraint system
will reduce not just
accidents, but
insurance rates and
worker stress and
worry. Consult with
